Salesforce’s Fresh Pitch: The Green Code Initiative

Sustainability is a vital topic for all of us in this modern world of work, and it can be unclear how each of us can make a difference when our jobs don’t seem to directly influence the real world. In the tech space, software development plays a significant role, and companies are realising the importance of sustainable practice – that includes in coding. Want to change the world, one keystroke at a time? CRM specialist Salesforce has new advice on how to be a greener developer.

Salesforce’s Fresh Pitch: The Green Code InitiativeEco Mode is onGreen theory

As reported by CIO Dive, Salesforce is going green, and it’s encouraging us to do the same.

Eco Mode is on

Salesforce is a leader in the cloud-based CRM space – customer relationship management software has revolutionised the processes inherent to business, and the valuable insights in its new Green Code Initiative promise to minimise the harm many of these actions have on the world around us. Not only is there guidance; it integrates sustainability into software development processes.

“[The Green Code Initiative] is intended to raise awareness and empower Salesforce’s ecosystem of Trailblazers to use their unique superpowers to protect the planet against climate change!”
– SALESFORCE

Salesforce outlines its ambitions in a new report, Sustainability Guide for Salesforce Technology. It hopes that these best practices can minimise the damage of UX designers, software engineers, systems architects and IT operations managers, who may not feel like have a part to play in the quest to reverse the negative impact modern work has on the environment.

The exponential growth of the technology sector has brought with it a surge in energy consumption and carbon emissions. Salesforce acknowledges that to date, most sustainability efforts have been focussed on hardware efficiency and electric grid decarbonisation, which anyone can agree are pretty high-end aspects of any business. These applicable tips on how to be a greener developer can help anyone eager to make a change.

Green theory

Yet it’s not just benevolence for benevolence’s sake; Salesforce appreciates that increasing efficiency across the board should be best practice. Bosses should take note: it’s not just the environment it can help to save. When it comes to ESG (environmental, social and governance) concerns, Salesforce survey data shows that three-quarters of so-called technologists – that is, workers across the entire tech sector – said they want to develop applications that do less harm to the environment.

In the long run, these tiny changes could help bring down costs too. Turns out, it pays to go green.

The Green Code has a clear core principle: coding language that uses less energy can significantly reduce emissions when deployed at scale. This includes shrinking image sizes and simplifying elements of web design, but even simpler actions we can all take such as consolidating screens, minimising page loads and making user journeys in UX more straightforward. Keeping a closer eye on your computer’s overall health and its stress points are more simple changes that everyone can make.

It’s a reminder that these small changes stack up quickly. Pay attention to the Green Code Initiative, and you too can be a (Sales)force of nature.
